40 years ago: Amendment allowing sale of liquor by the drink is defeated

According to a report of unofficial returns from 2,837 of the state’s 2,905 precincts, Kansas voters had decided against a change in the liquor laws. The amendment to allow the Legislature to license and tax the sale of liquor by the drink (as opposed to by the bottle) had had a good lead at one point, when four of the largest counties (Sedgwick, Johnson, Wyandotte, and Shawnee) had reported in. But as results from the rural areas came in, the margin dwindled and finally disappeared.

Locally, Republican incumbent state representatives Morris Kay and John Vogel won narrow victories over their Democratic challengers, and incumbent Republican sheriff Rex Johnson defeated Democrat George Kimball by more than 12,000 votes.

Gov. Robert Docking became the first Kansas governor to be elected to a third term, beating his opponent Kent Frizzell by 66,000.
