Two family members arrested after stabbing in 1300 block of Maple Lane

Two Lawrence residents were arrested early Tuesday following a stabbing, but they were released later as prosecutors declined to file charges, according to jail records.

About 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, a 71-year-old man was involved in an argument with his 45-year-old son in the 1300 block of Maple Lane, according to Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Matt Sarna.

After being stabbed in the head, the 45-year-old man was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. The father was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery.

After he was released from the hospital, the son also was arrested on an aggravated battery charge.

But Cheryl Wright, a spokeswoman for Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson, said prosecutors did not file charges Tuesday. She said they could file charges in the future if more information comes to light.

“It appears to be a mutual combat situation,” Wright said. “And the review hasn’t been able to determine who was the primary aggressor.”
