Fundraising event for Lawrence homeless shelter will be heavy on the chocolate

A chocolate contest and auction are on tap to help fund the operations of the Lawrence Community Shelter.

Leaders with the homeless shelter will present Chocolate and Tea at Three from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the Marriott Spring Hill Suites, 1 Riverfront Plaza.

The event will feature a chocolate baking contest open to the general public. There’s no cost to enter, but participants must make 24 servings of their chocolate creation, and agree to allow at least a dozen of the treats to be sold at the event’s auction.

The auction also will feature several non-food items, including tickets to an upcoming performance of the Kansas City Symphony, a tour of Lawrence-based Waxman Candles, a handmade quilt, and local artwork. The auction also will include dinner for six to be cooked, served and eaten with a crew of Lawrence firefighters at a local fire station.

Lawrence fire chief and school board member Mark Bradford is serving as honorary host of the Chocolate and Tea at Three event. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $5 for children under 12. They are available at the Lawrence Community Shelter, 214 W. 10th St., or at the door.
