KU Hospital closes majority of psychiatric ward due to fire code violations

November 1, 2010

— Kansas University Hospital says it has closed most of the beds in its psychiatric unit because of fire code violations.

The Kansas City Star reports that the hospital closed 20 of the unit's 32 inpatient beds last week to begin renovations.

Hospital spokesman Dennis McCulloch says the fire marshal told hospital officials that the fire code work needed to be taken care of as quickly as possible. He did not specify what the exact fire code violations.

The hospital's inpatient and outpatient psychiatric unit is in a 50-year-old building in Kansas City, Kan.

McCulloch says that even with just 12 beds available, the unit was not full last week. He says the unit will be back to normal operations soon.
