Battery charges filed against woman in early Sunday morning incident

Douglas County prosecutors on Monday charged a 25-year-old Lawrence woman with aggravated battery after another woman was flown Sunday morning to a Kansas City area hospital with head and face injuries.

James McCabria, an assistant Douglas County district attorney, said Sierra L. Shawnee was accused of using force to cause “great bodily harm” to the victim early Sunday in the 2500 block of Redbud Lane. Investigators do not suspect a weapon was used in the incident that occurred just before 2 a.m. Sunday.

Judge Pro Tem James George on Monday set Shawnee’s bond at $5,000 cash or surety and ordered, if released, she have not contact with the alleged victim.

In court McCabria said the victim was still at Kansas University Hospital and was expected to be released Tuesday. George set Shawnee’s next hearing for 2 p.m. Thursday.

Police and prosecutors have said the suspect and the victim were involved in a domestic relationship.
