Collins, Henry on fire at Combine

Kansas guard Sherron Collins gets the crowd going in the final minutes of Saturday's game against Nebraska.

Former Kansas University basketball players Sherron Collins and Xavier Henry shot well during individual drills at the recent NBA Draft Combine in Chicago.

NBAdraft.net reports that point guard Collins hit 82 of 115 shots, good for 71.3 percent. Shooting guard/small forward Henry made 84 of 119 attempts for 70.6 percent.

The only other players at the combine who shot 70 percent: Andy Rautins (77.7), Willie Warren (76.7), Mikhail Torrance (75.9), Luke Babbitt (75.7), Armon Johnson (73.9), Jordan Crawford (71.9) and Eric Bledsoe (70.3).

Collins cashed 17 of 25 threes from beyond the NBA three-point line for 68 percent. Henry made 13 of 25 threes for 52 percent.

Henry, 6-foot-6 from Oklahoma City, is expected to be a lottery (top 14) pick in the June 24 draft. Collins, 5-11 from Chicago, is considered a likely second-round pick. Former KU center Cole Aldrich, who is considered a lock for the lottery, did not participate in drills.

Draftexpress.com says Aldrich will be tapped seventh overall by Detroit and Henry 15th by Milwaukee. The website ranks Collins 40th overall in its top 100 prospects, but has not yet released second-round predictions.

Selby’s talented

Josh Selby, Rivals.com’s No. 1-rated player in the Class of 2010, is the highest-rated player to sign with a Bill Self-coached team.

Selby, a 6-3 point guard from Baltimore’s Lake Clifton High, most likely will be tapped Big 12 preseason freshman of the year. He’ll battle Kentucky’s Brandon Knight for national preseason freshman-of-the-year mention.

“He’s the most talented player I’ve ever recruited, definitely the highest-rated kid,” Self told Andy Katz of ESPN. “He’s going to be a terrific player. He is athletic, fast, can score, and he’s ornery. We just have to harness that energy. But he’ll be terrific.”

ESPN analyst Jay Williams nicknamed Selby “Showtime Selby” after witnessing his performance at the McDonald’s All-America dunk contest and All-America Game.

“The one thing I can say about Josh is every possession, he was trying to lock up defensively. Every time he had the ball, he remained aggressive,” Williams told the Journal-World. “He attacked the rim. He’s a guy who can shoot. I just love that style of play, because I think it’s rare when you see somebody that constantly is in attack mode. That’s a gear that he has that can set himself apart from the rest of the crew.”

Several of the country’s blue-chip basketball prospects are expected to attend Self’s elite camp, Friday through Sunday in Allen Fieldhouse and the Jayhawks’ practice facility. The camp is closed to the media and public.
