A 19-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man Friday pleaded no contest to criminal discharge of a firearm and possession of marijuana in connection with a March 7 incident near 23rd and Iowa streets.

A Lawrence police officer arrested Jerome Gilbert III after the officer heard gunshots and witnessed him firing a gun at a fleeing vehicle from a parking lot in the area.

Depending on his criminal history, Gilbert faces an 11-month to 34-month sentence for the firearm charge. Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone will sentence Gilbert on July 16.
