Broken Arrow sixth-grader Stefan Petrovic finished fourth Wednesday in the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C., said Mary Van Dyke, Stefan’s teacher in the gifted program.

“He is so impressive,” Van Dyke said. “What an accomplishment for all of those kids.”

Stefan, 12, made it into the top 10 out of 54 contestants Tuesday and earned a spot in Wednesday’s final round moderated by “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek.

Thirteen-year-old Aadith Moorthy of Palm Harbor, Fla., came out on top Wednesday as 10 boys faced off in a battle of world knowledge for the championship round. He wins a $25,000 college scholarship and a trip to the Galapagos to experience geography firsthand.

The finalists beat out more than 4 million students who took part in state and local competitions to make it to Washington.

Second-place winner, 13-year-old Oliver Lucier of Wakefield, R.I., will take home a $15,000 scholarship. Twelve-year-old Karthik Mouli of Boise, Idaho, came in third to win a $10,000 scholarship.

Stefan represented Kansas in Washington after winning the state bee in April.

He is the son of Uros and Zina Petrovic.
