The Lawrence High School stadium was filled Sunday afternoon for the annual graduation ceremony, where 376 students received their diplomas.

The event began at 4 p.m., and despite the warm weather, the bleachers were full. Family and friends of the Class of 2010 overflowed onto the football field.

During the ceremony social studies teacher David Platt was recognized as outstanding teacher. Seniors were allowed to vote for their favorite teacher earlier.

The class also voted for “citizen of the year.” They were to select a fellow student in their class. They voted for Spencer Renfro, who received a medal for the distinction.

Nine students received medallions for achieving a 4.0 grade point average throughout their high school careers.

The day was especially important for Scott Morgan, Lawrence school board president. His son, Calvin Morgan, graduated Sunday at Lawrence High. Instead of the usual handshake, Scott Morgan gave his son a hug as he handed him his diploma.

Scott Morgan delivered an address to the graduates, acknowledging his son. Calvin Morgan, who stood out by wearing a bow tie, said he had no input on his father’s speech but felt it went well.

The graduation ceremony ended with those attending singing the school’s fight song. The graduates then threw their caps into the air.
