Seabury golf team qualifies for state

? The Seabury Academy boys golf team shot a 417 to finish third overall in Monday’s Class 1A regional tournament at Cool Springs Golf Course, earning the school’s first trip to the state tournament in the process.

Reed Grabill shot an 88 to finish fifth overall and lead Seabury, while Bill Gibbs tied for seventh with a 93. Dan Almanza provided the team’s third-best score, shooting a 114, Frank Depenbusch finished with a 122, Brandon McCaffrey shot 131 and Michael Kressig came in with a 138.

“Course conditions were very tough because of the wet weather, not to mention the Bermuda fairways have not greened up, leaving the fairways a muddy mess,” coach Eric Edwards said. “In some ways, it was more advantageous to be in the first cut of rough versus being in the middle of the fairway.”

Pleasanton High took the team title, followed by Linn. Seabury beat out Frankfort for the final state spot by seven strokes.

The state tournament will be held next Monday at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.
