25 years ago: Steering committee to aid school board

An 11-member steering committee, after examining two reports submitted by administrators, teacher, parents and taxpayers, decided to summarize both reports and make some of their own recommendations to the Lawrence school board. Some of these included making short-term decisions to handle more immediate problems such as increased enrollment at the grade schools.

Eighteen children participated in a graduation ceremony for having completed the Community Children’s Center Head Start Program. About 150 parents, relatives and friends attended. Parents were very positive in their comments about the program, citing its successes in getting 3- to 5-year-olds ready for school.

More than 100 alumni were in town for the 50-year reunion for KU’s Class of 1935. They enjoyed the many changes on campus and reminisced about their Depression-era college years, when enrollment was just under 4,000 and tuition was $18.75 a semester.
