• The Kansas Bar Association hosted a champagne reception April 30 to honor 137 new admittees to the Kansas Bar, immediately following the swearing-in ceremony at the Topeka Performing Arts Center.

• The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, along with other local agencies, will sponsor a free workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 29 at the health facility, 200 Maine, Suite B. • Ashlee Harrison, a nationally certified therapist of massage and bodywork, attended the seminar “Precision Neuromuscular Therapy of the Lower Extremity” in March in Akron, Ohio. The workshop covered pathologies and treatments of sciatica, hamstring strains, knee injuries, shin splints and plantar fasciitis. Harrison practices in Lawrence.

• Dr. Sean Cupp, a sports medicine physician with OrthoKansas, PA, presented a talk on nonsurgical treatment of sternum dislocations at the 19th annual meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine on April 17-22 in Cancun, Mexico. Cupp also serves as a team physician for Kansas University athletics and is on staff with the Kansas Center for Athletic Medicine, LLC, a program sponsored by OrthoKansas, PA.

• Andy Lewis has received national certification as a certified hospice and palliative nurse by the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses based in Pittsburgh. • Lewis “Wimp” Roberts of Lawrence was selected posthumously as the winner of the 2010 Liberty Bell Award given by the Douglas County Bar Association at its annual Law Day luncheon on May 3. The award is to acknowledge outstanding community service and recognize a person or entity who has promoted a better understanding of the rule of law, encouraged a greater respect for law and the courts, stimulated a sense of civic responsibility and contributed to good government in the community. Roberts served the 7th Judicial District for 10 years as a bailiff and 11 years as a bond coordinator. The award was accepted by Mary Lou Roberts, his wife.

• Golf Course Management, the official publication of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America garnered 11 awards during the Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association’s national awards ceremony May 6 at its annual meeting in Tucson, Ariz. The publication received four first-place awards. In addition, GCM was honored with a “best in show” award for a photo spread in its December 2009 issue.

• Willem Anemaat, the president and co-founder of DARcorporation in Lawrence, has been named a winner of the SAE International 2010 Forest R. McFarland Award. The award recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to the SAE Engineering Meetings Board and the development and dissemination of information through technical meetings, conferences and professional development programs, or for contributions in facilitating or enhancing the interchange of technical information.

• Central National Bank announces Joe Karnes has successfully completed the requirements for his Certified Trust and Financial Advisor certification. The certification requires previous experience in wealth management, completion of a training program and professional references, as well as a qualifying score on a comprehensive examination.
