Police investigating Oliver Hall trash fire

Police early Thursday morning were investigating a small fire that apparently started in the trash room on the sixth floor of Oliver Hall on the KU campus.

According to KU Police Sgt. Troy Mailen, the fire call was made about 2:14 a.m.

Residence hall staff members had reportedly been able to extinguish the fire before fire crews arrived on the scene. A bag of charcoal and lighter fluid was said to have been ignited in the trash can.

Mailen said students living in the residence hall were evacuated during the investigation and were not allowed to return to the building until about 3:44 a.m.

KU Police and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical are investigating the incident.
