Kansas soldier dies while in Iraq

? The Defense Department says a soldier from Kansas has died in Iraq of injuries he suffered in a noncombat incident.

He’s identified as 27-year-old Sgt. Ralph Mena of Hutchinson. The death was announced Wednesday.

The department says Mena died Tuesday in Tikrit. No details were released on how he was injured.

KWCH-TV reports that Mena attended Hutchinson High School in the 1999-2000 school year and was married this past Valentine’s Day.

He was assigned to 72nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion, 7th Signal Brigade, 5th Signal Command, Mannheim, Germany.

Services are being handled by Elliot Mortuary in Hutchinson.
