One arrested after car chase through Lawrence

A 33-year-old Lawrence man was arrested early Tuesday morning after leading police on a car chase through the streets of Lawrence.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Michael McLaren, the pursuit began about 1:56 a.m. in the 2000 block of Stratford Road. Officers saw the suspect vehicle driving at a high rate of speed and followed the driver. During the chase, which lasted about 10 minutes, the suspect ran red lights, drove through stop signs and pulled multiple U-turns. The driver reached speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour during the chase.

McLaren said the driver also drove off the road briefly near the intersection of Harvard Road and Crestline Drive but was able to maintain control of the vehicle and get back on the road.

The suspect got out of his vehicle and took off on foot in the 3300 block of West Eighth Street. Officers engaged in a short foot pursuit and were able to apprehend the man. He was taken into custody shortly about 2:04 a.m. without further incident.

McLaren said officers were investigating the possible use of alcohol in the incident. The man was taken into custody on charges of attempting to flee and elude, reckless driving, driving while intoxicated, no driver’s license, leaving the scene of a non-injury accident as well as a number of traffic violations.

No one was injured during the incident.
