Despite a pair of hits from junior Brandon Macias and 52/3 strong innings by freshman Tanner Poppe, Kansas University allowed three runs in the final two innings to permit Oklahoma State to rally for a 5-4 victory in the teams’ Big 12 baseball finale on Sunday at Reynolds Stadium.

Pinch hitter Luis Uribe’s single in the eighth inning plated the eventual winning run in the rubber match of the three-game series.

The Jayhawks fell to 26-19-1 overall and 7-10-1 in the Big 12, while OSU improved to 26-18 and 7-11.

For the second straight day, strong starting pitching gave KU a lead heading into the seventh inning, but for the second game in a row, the Jayhawks could not hold on.

Saturday, Oklahoma State rallied for an 8-7 victory in 12 innings.

On Sunday the Cowboys trailed, 3-2, heading into the bottom of the seventh, but scored two runs on an RBI double by Davis Duren and a throwing error after a failed bunt attempt.

After Kansas tied the score in the eighth inning, OSU brought in the winning run with three straight singles to center field against relief pitcher Travis Blankenship.

Nico Rosthenhausler led off the bottom of the eighth with a bloop single over Robby Price into center field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and another bloop to center that fell in front of a diving Brian Heere.

That set up Uribe’s RBI hit, the third straight single to center.

Macias went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

The Jayhawks will return home next weekend for a three-game series against Border Showdown rival Missouri, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.

KU will play seven of its final 10 remaining regular season games at home.
