• Marilyn Russell, Ph.D., director of the Academic Support Center at Haskell Indian Nations University, has officially assumed duties as president of the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA). Russell is the first ARLIS/NA president to be an enrolled member of a tribe. She is an officially enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe at Leech Lake Indian reservation and a member of the Pillanger Band.

• Trisha Brabender, physical therapist, has joined the staff of Lawrence Therapy Services. Brabender earned a master’s degree in physical therapy from Kansas University Medical Center and has been practicing locally since 1993.

• Resonate Pictures, a Lawrence film and media production company, received the Platinum Remi Award for its film “And What Remains” at the 43rd annual WorldFest Film Festival on April 17 in Houston. The Platinum Remi Award is the top award in the short documentary category.

• Kansas University’s 30-second television ad has been recognized twice by the Telly Awards Council on the basis of merit and popular appeal.

The KU TV spot, “This is Kansas,” received: a silver in the People’s Choice Telly Awards, (the highest award) based on votes on YouTube; and a bronze medal from the Silver Telly Council (silver is the highest).

• Saint John Hospital, Leavenworth, has selected respiratory therapist Steve Martin, of Lawrence, as its 2010 Employee of the Year. Martin works with Saint John Hospital patients providing respiratory treatments for pulmonary problems such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and ventilator management. As a member of the cardiopulmonary department, he also is part of the hospital’s Rapid Response and Code Blue teams.

• Sunflower Bank wrapped up its ninth annual “ABC: Be True to Your School” campaign. Bank President Glynn Sheridan presented donations totaling more than $2,400 to participating area schools and awarded local student winners $270 for A’s on their report cards.

• The Lawrence Technology Association’s May luncheon will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Jade Mongolian BBQ, 1511 W. 23rd St. Cost is $12 for members and $14 for nonmembers. • Aaron Black, director of operations at Wilkins-Rogers Inc., in Mount Joy, Pa., was elected 2010-2011 treasurer of the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) at the Association’s 114th annual conference and expo April 22 in Las Vegas. As treasurer, Black will be responsible for overseeing preparations for the association’s 2011 and 2012 conferences in San Antonio and Spokane, Wash. He is also in line to serve as the association’s president in 2012-2013. Black is a native of Eudora.

• The Kansas Rural Center and the Kansas Department of Commerce will host a series of five direct marketing workshops for agricultural producers throughout Kansas. Sessions will be in Dodge City, Marysville, Independence, Lawrence and Newton.

The Lawrence session will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, Dreher Building, 2110 Harper St.

• An open house honoring J. Paul Flower, former owner of Finley Abstract & Title, Oskaloosa will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the office of Kansas Secured Title, Jefferson County, 319 Jefferson, Oskaloosa.

• Terry Coder, P.E., has been assigned senior traffic engineer for the entire firm of Professional Engineering Consultants, which has offices in Topeka, Lawrence, Wichita, Pittsburg and Tulsa, Okla. Coder is a senior associate for the firm.

• Lawrence Country Club was named a 2010 Groundwater Guardian Green Site by the Groundwater Foundation in recognition of the site’s groundwater and environmental stewardship. This is the club’s third year of designation, under the leadership of Bill Irving, golf course superintendent.
