Tempe, Ariz. ? Joel Pineiro took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Kansas City Royals, 10-2, on Monday.

Pineiro worked 62/3 innings, his longest of five spring appearances, and allowed only two hits and a run with two walks and two strikeouts.

“They hit some balls right at people,” Pineiro said, downplaying the no-hit innings. “The last couple of games. I’m just trying to get ready for the regular season.”

Over his last 15.2 innings, Pineiro has allowed three earned runs. His spring ERA is now 3.48.

Scott Podsednik’s lead-off double in the sixth broke up the no-hitter. Podsednik scored one out later on Rick Ankiel’s double.

Royals starter Kyle Farnsworth made his second start and fifth appearance of the spring and allowed one hit in two innings.

“I didn’t feel my best but it went all right,” said Farnsworth, the longtime reliever who is trying to convert to starting.

He hasn’t started since the 2000 season with the Cubs.

“It’s not my decision,” he said. “I can only go out there and put up zeroes.”

Farnsworth went 1-5 with a 4.58 ERA in 41 games for the Royals last season.

Royals closer Joakim Soria was hit hard, allowing four hits and four earned runs without recording an out.
