Display of quilts to honor organ donors

Lawrence Memorial Hospital will display eight Donor Memorial Quilts to raise awareness about organ donations.

The quilts are dedicated to the memory of people who were organ, tissue and eye donors.

Each quilt contains 44 squares created by donor families in memory of their loved ones. It takes about a year to complete one quilt.

The quilts are created by Midwest Transplant Network, a nonprofit corporation that provides organ procurement services for hospitals in Missouri and Kansas, including LMH.

“The quilts show real people who gave the gift of life; it’s very bittersweet,” said Melinda Swoyer, LMH clinical educator.

The quilts will be displayed from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday in the lobby at the hospital, 325 Maine.
