With the annual Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade one day away, organizers are pleased with the number of floats that will make their way from South Park into North Lawrence on Wednesday.

“It will be a weekday record,” said Roger Browning, chairman of the parade committee.

He said more than 100 floats will be entered once the parade starts at 1 p.m.

One of the floats in Wednesday’s festivities will aim to encourage children to be more active outdoors. Girl Scouts will ride on the float of the Lawrence task force Outside for a Better Inside, which works to bring awareness to the benefits of outdoor activity for children.

Group members will also publicly debut a new song written by Lawrence native Kelley Hunt called “Outside for a Better Inside.”

“We thought it would be a good way to get our name out there,” said Mary Jones, a task force member.

The parade committee on Wednesday also will announce its fundraising totals for this year’s charities: Women’s Transitional Care Services, Douglas County CASA, Family Promise, VanGo and the Lawrence Humane Society.

The route runs from South Park, north on Massachusetts Street, then across the Kansas River Bridge into North Lawrence. Construction will force this year’s parade to Elm Street, east to North Fourth Street, to Locust Street. The parade will head east on Locust Street until it turns south on North Ninth Street, stopping at The Flamingo Club.

The committee on Sunday named Katelyn Affalter as this year’s parade queen. Her father, Dan Affalter, a retired Lawrence police captain, is this year’s grand marshal.
