Lawrence youngsters take 2nd and 5th place at state spelling bee
Lawrence youngsters Isaac Ward and Stefan Petrovic finished in second and fifth place, respectively, at Saturday’s 2010 Topeka Capital-Journal Regional Spelling Bee.
Ward was the last of 46 spellers eliminated after 25 rounds, including 13 rounds of back-and-forth with first-place winner Chase Brown of Richmond. Brown won the bee after spelling “genealogy” correctly, following Ward’s misspelling of “forbearance.”
Ward, an eighth-grader at Bishop Seabury Academy, is now an alternate for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in June.
