Jury convicts resident of violent armed robbery in central Lawrence

A Douglas County jury found a 26-year-old Lawrence man guilty of robbery and several other charges on Wednesday, for an Aug. 7 incident in central Lawrence.

Franz Stangl

District Attorney Charles Branson said Franz Stangl kicked in the door of a residence in the 900 block of Louisiana Street and “held a gun to the victim’s head, demanded items the victim did not have and proceeded to punch, kick and stomp the victim’s head.” Prosecutors said Stangl also broke two pairs of the victim’s glasses, ripped a modem out of his wall and stole his cell phone.

Stangl is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief Judge Robert Fairchild at 8:30 a.m. April 16. He was found guilty of robbery, aggravated burglary, intimidation of a witness or victim and criminal damage to property.

Mark Ottman

Mark Ottman, Stangl’s accomplice, pleaded no contest last year to charges of robbery and aggravated burglary and was sentenced by Judge Fairchild to 32 months in prison.
