Sioux City, Iowa ? At halftime, it was still a game. Then the wheels fell off.

Shawnee (Ohio) State made 7-of-9 three-point goals in the second half and ran away from Haskell Indian Nations University, 79-40, on Wednesday morning in the first round of the NAIA Div. II women’s basketball tournament.

“They just kept bombing away,” HINU coach Phil Homeratha said, “and before you know it, they were up by 10 or 15.”

The No. 8-ranked Bears led 31-24 at the break, but outscored the Indians, 48-16, in the second half.

“They were a good team and they figured out we had a two-pronged attack with Maria (Parker) and Justina (George),” Homeratha said.

George, who was averaging 18.3 points a game, was the focus of the Bears’ defense. The 5-foot-7 senior missed eight of her 10 shots, finished with only five points and was guilty of seven turnovers.

Parker scored 10 points, more than six below her average and the 6-0 senior was charged with nine turnovers, a third of the Indians’ total. Forward Autumn Burtt also scored 10 points.

Haskell wound up with a 20-9 record in its first trip to the NAIA Div. II Tournament.
