Disturbing tie

To the editor:

As a runner, I have tried to support the city by paying to run the annual Shamrock Shuffle 5K. I received my race information in the mail and discovered this year’s race is starting at the Flamingo Club; all race activities will center on the Flamingo Club.

The association of the Flamingo Club with our city’s St. Patrick’s Day events has always been disturbing. According to lawrence.com, an informational World Company Web site, the Flamingo Club is a “nudey joint.” According to this same Web site, lap dancing is available at the Flamingo Club. As a result I will not participate in this year’s race; I will not go inside the Flamingo Club.

I hope more runners will feel as I do and not participate in this year’s Shamrock Shuffle. We need to stop tacit support for a business that dishonors women. As a father of a daughter, I cannot show any support for a business that uses daughters in such a crude manner. It’s time we send a message to the organizers of the St. Patrick Day events: Sponsorship of events by the Flamingo Club is not acceptable. This is not being prudish; it is holding an organization responsible for its actions and those willing to call it acceptable.
