Former Jayhawk Woodland shoots 76 on Day 1 of U.S. Open

? Former Kansas University standout Gary Woodland completed the first round of the U.S. Open golf tournament with a 5-over par 76 on Thursday.

Woodland is playing in his second U.S. Open. He competed in last year’s tournament at Bethpage, where he tied for 47th place in New York.

Woodland, a Topeka native who currently resides in Orlando, Fla., finished his Jayhawk career in 2007.

Woodland was in the first U.S. Open group of the day and started the round with two pars before carding a bogey on the third hole. He finished the front nine four over par after making bogey on holes 5, 8 and 9.

On the back nine, he recorded consecutive birdies on 14 and 15 to reach 3-under par, before going 2 over on the last three holes.

Woodland will begin his second round at 2:30 p.m. today on hole No. 10.
