Los Angeles — Former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, who led the Bruins to 10 NCAA championships and died on June 4, has been buried in Los Angeles.

UCLA athletics spokesman Marc Dellins confirmed that Wooden was laid to rest Friday afternoon after a private ceremony for family and invited guests at Forest Lawn’s Old North Church in the Hollywood Hills

A public memorial for Wooden is scheduled for June 26 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.

Wooden died of natural causes at the age of 99 at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. He had been hospitalized since May 26.

Wooden’s 10 national championships included an unmatched streak of seven in a row from 1967 to 1973.

Over 27 years, he won 620 games.

UCLA coach Howland has surgery

Los Angeles — UCLA basketball coach Ben Howland is recuperating after having surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles’ tendon.

A team spokesman said Saturday that Howland had the surgery on Friday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and he’s resting comfortably at home.

No details on how or when Howland sustained the injury were provided.

Last September, he had an appendectomy.

Garrigus holds two-stroke lead

Memphis, Tenn. — Still recovering from a bout of food poisoning, Robert Garrigus got hot with his short putter and shot a 4-under 66 to grab a two-stroke lead Saturday over Robert Karlsson of Sweden after three rounds at a steamy St. Jude Classic.

It’s the first time the 32-year-old Garrigus has led a PGA Tour event by himself, and he surged to the top of the leaderboard with four birdies and an eagle against two bogeys to reach 11-under 199.

U.S. sweeps Britain, takes lead

Manchester-By-The-Sea, Mass. — A day after a shaky start, the United States swept all six matches at the Curtis Cup on Saturday to take an 81/2-31/2 lead over Great Britain and Ireland.

LPGA State Farm postponed

Springfield, Ill. — The third round of the LPGA State Farm Classic was postponed Saturday because of thunderstorms.

Heavy rain suspended play for four hours before the round was halted with 46 players still on the course. The round is scheduled to resume at 7 a.m. today.

Estoril, Portugal — Thomas Bjorn shot a second straight 7-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead over streaking Richard Green of Australia at the Estoril Open on Saturday.

Orton named starting QB for camp

Englewood, Colo. — The endorsement of Kyle Orton as his starting quarterback maybe wasn’t as emphatic this time around.

Still, Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels insisted Saturday after minicamp that Orton will be his guy heading into training camp.

From there, the competition is open as Brady Quinn and rookie Tim Tebow will have an opportunity to win the job.

London — Americans Sam Querrey and Mardy Fish will meet in the final at Queen’s Club after contrasting wins on Saturday.
