On Friday, the Boys and Girls Club will have its traditional Communitywide Juneteenth Celebration, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

The celebration, which will be in Broken Arrow Park at 31st and Louisiana streets from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., will include oral histories about Juneteenth, food for sale, games and activities for children and a street dance. Several community organizations will have information booths.

Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 as a way to observe June 19th, the day that the abolishment of slavery was announced in Texas.

Summer youth programs at the Boys and Girls Club celebrate Juneteenth by learning about the history of the day, making posters and writing essays.

Friday’s celebration in the park is the culmination of what the students have learned.
