From the Lawrence Daily World for June 5, 1910: “The entire seating capacity of the two lower floors of the opera house was utilized last evening when the commencement exercises of the Lawrence High school were held. The class orations and speeches were new and bright and had their interest for everyone present. Dr. Powell has gained the reputation in Lawrence as a practical speaker and modern thinker, and his plain talk to the class was full of sensible and practical advice…. At a meeting of the Board of Regents of the university yesterday, the contract for the construction of the new Administration building was awarded to a St. Louis firm. The awarding of the contracts has been hanging fire for some time. However, now that the pact is sealed, work will begin at once and it is provided that the first wing shall be completed by June 30, 1911. Ground for the site just north of the Gymnasium was broken last fall…. Harry Brown, who resigned from the city police force the other day, suddenly disappeared to parts unknown yesterday noon. No one knows where or why he has gone.”
