Event supports women’s services

Each year the Willow Domestic Violence Center provides shelter to more than 250 women and children as well as counseling and support services to thousands more. Founded in 1976, WDVC was the first battered woman’s shelter in Kansas. One way the agency spreads awareness is through the annual Take Back the Night event.

Take Back the Night is an international effort to support survivors of sexual assault, rape and violence. This year’s event is set for 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, at South Park in Lawrence. The event includes entertainment, children’s activities, food vendors, speakers and displays from community organizations. Participants will also join in a march up Massachusetts Street to Watson Park, at Sixth and Kentucky streets, where a Speak-Out and Candle Light Vigil will take place.

The event is free and open to all ages.
