80-year-old Lawrence man dies in accident west of Emporia

The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified an 80-year-old Lawrence man as the victim of a Wednesday morning fatal accident that occurred during rain in Chase County.

Carl H. Allam, of Lawrence, was driving a 1997 Buick LeSabre east in the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 50 around 3 a.m. Wednesday when the car was struck by a westbound semitrailer, according to the KHP report. The collision happened 8 miles east of Strong City or about 10 miles west of Emporia.

KHP Trooper Scott Proffitt said the wreck occurred during a period of rain in an area of curves on the highway.

“Those two things alone can cause enough problems,” Proffitt said, adding the wreck was still under investigation.

Allam’s eastbound car was either moving slowly or stopped in the westbound lane at the time of the crash, according to the report. Allam died at the scene.

The driver of the semitrailer, 57-year-old Jerry Henley of Jackson, Ark., was not injured. Both men were wearing seat belts.
