Memphis Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley is being portrayed in various blogs on the Internet as exceedingly cheap regarding Xavier Henry’s still-to-be-signed rookie contract.

Former Kansas University guard Henry sat out play in the Las Vegas summer league last week following the advice of his agent, Arn Tellum, who doesn’t want Henry to play without guaranteed pay.

Heisley told the Memphis Commercial Appeal that, “we have not come to contractual terms with him (Henry), so my understanding is that his agent decided not to let him play in the summer league until a contract is signed.”

Henry’s draft slot (No. 12) guarantees him $1,683,500 this season, with one catch. SLAM Magazine reports that “teams can offer 80-120 percent of the standard rookie salary scale to first round picks. Most teams offer 120 percent.”

According to Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal, the Grizzlies allegedly offered 100 percent with the other 20 percent being incentive-based. Others have reported that the Grizzlies offered just 80 percent of the total.

The rap on the Grizzlies is almost all teams award the 120 percent amount.

SLAM writes: “It’s amazing to think that Heisley can throw $84 million at Rudy Gay and is still haggling over a few thousand with Henry and fellow first round pick Greivis Vazquez, who, on the other hand, played this week at the summer league despite being unsigned.”

Robinson goes scoreless

Former Kansas University guard Russell Robinson did not score while playing just four minutes in the NBA Developmental League’s 97-86 loss to Atlanta on Saturday in the NBA summer league. Robinson missed two shots, both threes.
