A May thunderstorm had caused some of the weather equipment at Sunflower Cablevision to malfunction. Channel 6 was currently showing a temperature of minus 40 degrees and a humidity of 98 percent. New equipment was expected to be shipped soon which would correct the problem.

A 14-year-old Journal-World newspaper carrier heard one of his elderly customers calling for help when he left her newspaper at her front door. He ran for the building manager, but after finding the manager wasn’t in, the boy alerted another resident, who called the fire department. An ambulance arrived and the resident was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for dehydration. The residents praised the actions of the young man, Michael Mast, a rising ninth-grader at West Junior High.

Lawrence city officials were told by their attorney that they were unable to regulate activities on Kansas Turnpike Authority land and therefore could not help the North Michigan Street residents who were upset about the smell and noise from the temporary asphalt plant nearby.
