Northern Iowa wins best upset at ESPYs

University of Northern Iowa's Adam Koch (34), left, and Kansas guard Xavier Henry (1) run for a loose Saturday, March 20, 2010, in Oklahoma City.

The University of Northern Iowa basketball team was honored for its second-round NCAA Tournament victory over Kansas University at Wednesday’s ESPY Awards show in Los Angeles. UNI coach Ben Jacobson, guard Ali Farokhmanesh and forward Adam Koch accepted the trophy.

“Why don’t you pass it over to Adam,” Jacobson said. “I’m afraid Ali might shoot that thing.”

Farokhmanesh hit the clinching three-pointer in the Panthers’ upset victory in Oklahoma City.

In the Best Upset category, UNI beat out: golfer Y.E. Yang, who edged Tiger Woods in the 2009 PGA Championship; Frankie Edgar, who stunned MMA fighter B.J. Penn; and the Hawaii softball squad, which defeated No. 1 Alabama.
