KU Chancellor Gene Budig was in Washington, D.C., where he met with Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole about the federal government’s commitment to university research.

One of four anti-apartheid protesters who had been charged with trespassing in May during a sit-in in the chancellor’s office was acquitted. Judge Jean Shepherd explained that the plainclothes KU police officer who had arrested the protester had never officially revealed that he was a police officer. The director of KU Police and the arresting officer said this was a mere technicality and that the identity of the officer was well known to the protesters, but they added that they would strictly follow police procedure in future dealings with protesters.

More than 500 people so far had called the hotline established to help culture growers recover money they had invested in the Culture Farms operation.

Twenty storage units at A-1 Mini Storage had been broken into overnight, but police were not yet sure what had been stolen. Bolt cutters had been used to cut the locks of the units. The company was taking some steps to prevent future thefts, including the use of guard dogs at the facility.
