Raiders go 1-4 at tourney

? The Lawrence Raiders went 1-4 at the Great Plains Shootout, a wood-bat youth baseball tournament held Thursday through Sunday.

On Thursday, the Raiders fell to Raytown, Mo., 12-0. They were held hitless until the bottom of the sixth, when Josh McDermott singled for their only hit.

Later Thursday, Lawrence fell to Mountain Vista, Colo., 8-5. Austin Holloday was 2-for-2 with a home run, and Josh Holland tripled.

On Friday, Natural Baseball Black held the Raiders hitless in a 16-0 victory over the Lawrence team.

Saturday, the Raiders claimed their lone tournament win, a 4-3 victory over Palmer Ridge, Colo., behind a complete game from Joe Odrowski.

Voted the game’s MVP, Odrowski gave up four hits with nine strikeouts and four walks over seven innings. Bill Slivinski and Nathan Ward each had a double; Ward’s plated the game-winner.

Sunday, Natural Baseball Red blanked the Raiders again, 13-0.

“Pretty much rained on us the entire game,” Raiders coach Bryan Wyatt said. “Balls were slick, and footing was treacherous, but we perservered. We had chances to score, but muddy conditions and base-running decision held us scoreless in the game. All in all, I’m real proud of our team playing against such top-quality teams and pitchers.”
