Offices, services to close for holiday

Most government offices and public services in Lawrence and area towns will be closed Monday in observance of Independence Day, which is today.

All city, county and state offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the General Services Administration and the federal courts. Douglas County District Court will be closed Monday.

Banks will be closed Monday.

Lawrence Transit System buses will not operate Sunday, but they will run Monday. Parking meters in downtown Lawrence will be free Monday.

Yard trimmings will not be collected Monday. Instead they will be collected during the normal weekly trash pickup. No other changes are planned for the solid waste route schedules. Commercial solid waste pickups will run as usual.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed today and Monday. The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department and Lawrence Workforce Center also will close Monday.

The U.S. Postal Service won’t make regular deliveries Monday, and customer service offices at post offices will be closed. UPS and FedEx will not make regular deliveries Monday.

Douglas County Senior Services will be closed Monday. Dining centers will be closed and there will be no home-delivered meals. Lawrence Meals on Wheels also will not deliver Monday.

LINK, the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, 221 W. 10th St., will serve meals from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. Doors open at noon.

Prairie Park Nature Center will be open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today and closed Monday, except for its Eco-Energy Adventure Camp.

All Lawrence recreation facilities will be closed today, including Holcom Park Recreation Center, Community Building and East Lawrence Recreation Center.

The East Lawrence center will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, and the Community Building and Holcom Park center will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. South Park Recreation Center will be closed Monday, except for programs there.

There will be no Unified Day Camp for special populations on Friday or Monday. All other special populations programs will operate as normal Friday and Saturday but not Monday.

Recreation classes will meet Monday but not Saturday or today. Summer Playgrounds will not meet Monday.

Adult sports will play as scheduled Friday and Monday. No league games are scheduled for Saturday and today. No youth sports games are scheduled for the weekend, but they will resume Monday.

All aquatic fitness and instructional classes will run as scheduled Saturday and Monday.

Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Road, will be open and accepting tee times.

The city’s indoor and outdoor aquatic centers will be open from 1 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. today. Both will be open on their regular schedules Saturday and Monday. South Park Wading Pool will be open 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, closed today and open 1:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

Liquor stores will be open.

The customer service department of the Journal-World will be open for calls and walk-ins from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday.
