25 years ago: Commission seems to favor traffic bypass south of town

Shawnee County District Judge James Buchele upheld two cease and desist orders which had been issued during the past month by the Kansas Securities Commission. The orders prevented Culture Farms Inc. from purchasing bacterial cultures from growers across the nation. State securities officials claimed that the ruling put the investment venture out of business in Kansas, but company officials and attorneys said they were still undecided about the impact of the court’s decision.

At a recent meeting, most city commissioners appeared to be in favor of the idea of a traffic bypass south and west of Lawrence. City Manager Buford Watson recommended that the city pay 30 to 35 percent of the engineering costs for the southern portion of the loop. Meanwhile, some rural Lawrence residents raised questions about the plan, saying that it could possibly upset the character and environment of the residential areas west of the city.
