Lawrence couple touts 5K run to raise funds for agency in Tanzania

Geoff Knight and Jenny Peck are back in Lawrence after doing community work in Tanzania, and they want your help.

The Lawrence Foxtrot, a 5k run on Saturday, will help raise money for Foxes’ NGO, a nongovernmental organization based in the African country.

The race begins at 9 a.m. at the South Lawrence Trafficway trail behind the South Wind 12 movie theater, 3433 Iowa.

Proceeds from the event will help fund the work of Foxes’ NGO. The organization, based in the Mufundi district of Tanzania, supports orphans and foster families in the area.

With the goals of curbing the spread of HIV-AIDS and teaching life skills, Foxes’ NGO uses outreach programs and development projects to enrich the community.

“Jenny and I are both from Lawrence,” Knight said. “We got married in Tanzania and came home to have our child here … and while we were back we figured, why not spread the word about our organization and what we’re doing?”

A silent auction is planned at 8 p.m. Saturday at The Oread, 1200 Oread Ave.

The event will include the first in a series of discussions to educate attendees about the work Foxes’ NGO is doing in Tanzania.

Subsequent talks will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 7 at Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt., and noon Feb. 9 at Kansas University’s Center for Research on Learning, 1122 West Campus Road.

Registration for the 5k is $20 before Saturday and $25 on race day. For more information, visit lawrencefoxtrot.webs.com.
