25 years ago: KU classified employees meet with legislators

Local inspectors said Lawrence had not types of chemical installations that could cause severe problems during a disaster like a tornado. However, some were concerned about tanks of ammonia at the Cooperatave Farm Chemicals plant just east of the city limits.

Kansas University classified employees met with local legislators to express concerns and grievances with pay and benefit proposals. KU had about 1,000 non-faculty staff members seeking better pay as the new legislature session got under way.

Capt. Marilyn Steele, newly promoted, was about to complete her 20th year in law enforcement even though she originally had not intended to work in that field. Her new rank made her third in command after sheriff Rex Johnson and undersheriff Loren Anderson in the sheriff’s department, where she had a notable role as a deputy.

Local travel agents were kept unusually busy due to an air fare war across the nation. Many were landing low-cost tickets to take advantage of the development.
