From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 27, 1910: At the banquet of the businessmen’s class at the YMCA, the Rev. W.A. Powell of the Presbyterian Church called for Lawrence not only to grow bigger but better, with better citizenship by everyone. He had some hard words for public officials, saying there are at least 200 places in Lawrence unfit for human habitation. . . . There is joy in North Lawrence because the ice jam at Lake View broke loose and stopped there, preventing new damage and danger even though the Santa Fe tracks were flooded by the backup of water. The river is generally clearing below the dam here but there still are ice chunks to contend with. There is little doubt that the use of dynamite prevent a lot of the problems we could have had. . . . On the way home from Quincy School yesterday, two boys got into an argument over a marbles game and one struck the other in the head with a brick. Stitches were needed and the boy is lucky because he could have been killed or paralyzed.
