Lawrence man arrested after early-morning car chase

Pursuit spanned approximately 10 miles, lasted more than 20 minutes

A 36-year-old Lawrence man was arrested early Sunday after leading authorities on a chase through east Lawrence and into rural Douglas County in a stolen car.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Matt Sarna, the pursuit began at 12:06 a.m. when police attempted to stop a black Ford Mustang at the intersection of 19th and Barker streets in east Lawrence. The driver headed north to the intersection of 15th and Barker streets, where he turned east and drove more than fives miles east into rural Douglas County before making a loop and heading south on East 1900 Road.

Lawrence Police and Douglas County Sheriff’s Officers stopped the vehicle in the 1300 block of East 1900 Road with the assistance of spike strips. Officers found the man attempting to hide in a ditch, where they arrested him without further incident. Neither the suspect nor any officers were injured in the pursuit, which ended at about 12:30 a.m. Details on how fast the suspect was driving were not made available Sunday.

The man was arrested on charges of felony theft, felony attempt to flee or elude, reckless driving and driving while revoked.
