Even though area law enforcement agencies did not use special patrols on New Year’s Eve, officers made an above-average number of arrests.

According to Douglas County Sheriff’s Office booking logs, officers made 20 arrests between 10 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday, nine of which involved drivers under the influence. Officers made nine arrests during the same eight-hour window a year earlier. In November and December 2009, Douglas County agencies made an average of 9.9 arrests per weekend night.

The arrests were made on charges ranging from failure to appear in court to aggravated battery. Lawrence Police Capt. Paul Fellers said two of the evening’s arrests occurred after an incident at Quinton’s, 615 Mass. Officers were dispatched about 11:58 p.m. to the downtown bar after a fight had broken out, Fellers said. Before police arrived at the scene, a 24-year-old Overland Park woman was reportedly dancing on one of the tables inside the establishment. When told by another person in the bar that her behavior wasn’t appropriate, the woman began fighting.

One of her friends, a 23-year-old Lenexa man, joined her in the fight as the two were being removed from the bar. The man grabbed a chair and threw it, striking two people. The woman was arrested for battery, and the man was arrested on two counts of aggravated battery.

New Year’s Eve was the busiest recent night for law enforcement, but not by much: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has reported 16 or more arrests on four separate nights in the past two months.
