FSHS, LHS bowlers qualify for state

? The Free State and Lawrence High boys bowling teams placed 1-2 at their regional Saturday at Zuckey Bowl and qualified for the state meet.

Two Free State girls also qualified for state as individuals.

“It was a very good day for us,” FSHS coach Anita Carlson said. “We were sad to be so close with the girls, but it was a good day.”

Free State won the boys title with 2,561 pins. LHS was second with 2,541.

For the Firebirds, Robert Wagner (688 series) placed third, Nick Conrad (635) was sixth, and Adam Miltner (633) was seventh.

LHS had three medalists, too: Josh Russell (second, 690), Ryan Miller (fifth, 641) and Ben Wyatt (eighth, 626).

Free State’s Christina Picicci played third with a 588 series, and Gretel Briand was ninth with a 549 to qualify as individuals for state. The Firebird girls were fourth overall with 2,077 pins, just 40 pins shy of runner-up Junction City. The top two teams automatically qualify for state.

Alexah Gudenkau placed 20th to lead the LHS girls, who were eighth in the team race.
