Fire crews respond to a house fire in Eudora Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010.

Firefighters from Eudora Fire Department and Eudora and Wakarusa township fire departments contained a house fire at 1037 Cherry Street in Eudora Wednesday afternoon.

That’s one of two house fires area communities saw Wednesday

Eudora interim Fire Chief Chris Moore reported the fire at the one-story wood-frame home of Robert and Anita Musick was contained about 2 p.m.

Moore said no one was at home when the fire started. However, three people arrived at the home soon after neighbors reported the fire and entered the structure to retrieve valuables.

Everyone was safe, but one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Moore said a firefighter was treated at the scene for exhaustion.

Though one person reportedly was trapped during a modular home fire Wednesday northwest of Basehor, the resident escaped, according to a fire official.

Earlier in the day, a fire in a modular home at the southeast corner of 163rd Street and Hollingsworth Road in Basehor. The blaze started about 10:15 a.m., according to Stranger Township Fire Chief Bert Dunahm. He said a person was reported to be trapped in the home, but when firefighters arrived, the person had escaped.

Leavenworth County Emergency Medical Service treated the resident on scene.

Dunham said the cause of the fire was unknown, but that it was a difficult fire to tackle because it had a false roof.

Fairmount Township Fire Department was the lead department at the scene, Stranger Township, Leavenworth County Fire District 1 and Tonganoxie City fire departments were also at the scene, as was the American Red Cross.

The fire chief said two cats also were in the residence, but escaped the fire.
