From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 20, 1910: The state pure food inspector spent a day here checking various food operations and said he left with a lot of evidence about what needs to be done for better and healthier food and better service. . . . After a stormy and lengthy meeting of the county commissioners today, D.F. Heaston was chosen as superintendent of the county poor farm to succeed Cal Sizer. The vote was 2-1. Sizer had a petition but Heaston found the law on his side and prevailed. . . . Hog cholera has attacked the hogs at Lake View, five miles north of here, and during the last week 24 hogs on the farm of A.J. Parnell have been stricken and died from the disease. There has been a costly epidemic around the state but these are the first cases around here. This is serious business, farmers say. . . . Bell Telephone says it is planning major improvements here by burying many wires underground where the weather cannot affect them.
