Barbee, KU golf in eighth place

? Nate Barbee shot a pair of 76s to to lead Kansas University’s men’s golf team to a tie for eighth place after day one Monday at the Rice Intercollegiate.

The Jayhawks shot a 318 in round one, but rebounded in round two with a 307.

Barbee was tied for eighth individually.

“We are frustrated with how we played this morning, but I was happy with how the guys battled the cold weather and played much better in the afternoon,” KU coach Kit Grove said.

Kansas’ Alex Gutesha shot rounds of 79 and 76 to enter the final round tied for 27th. Senior Bryan Hackenberg and junior Jeff Bell are tied for 49th after two rounds with a score of 159. Freshman Chris Gilbert is in 76th place with rounds of 87 and 85.

Rice, the host school, leads the event by eight strokes over Auburn. Christopher Brown and Michael Whitehead of Rice and Will McCurdy of Auburn are tied atop the individual leaderboard with 147 strokes.

The final round is Tuesday.
