Israel Mireles sits in a Butler County courtroom on Friday in El Dorado. Jurors deliberated just more than an hour before convicting Mireles, 26, in the death of Emily Sander. The Butler Community College student was also known as Internet porn model Zoey Zane.

— A jury convicted a man of capital murder and rape Friday in the killing of a Kansas college student who led a secret life as an Internet porn model.

Jurors deliberated just more than an hour before convicting Israel Mireles, 26, in the death of Emily Sander. The 18-year-old Butler Community College student’s disappearance received national attention after it was revealed she also was known as Internet model Zoey Zane.

An aggravated sodomy count was dropped by Butler County District Judge David Ricke, who said it was part of the capital murder charge.

Family and friends of Sander cried after the verdicts were read. Mireles showed no reaction as he was led out of the courtroom.

Mireles testified Friday that he left a so-called mystery man in a motel room where he’d gone with Sander after a night of underage drinking, and found her dead when he returned.

He said he went on the run because he figured authorities would blame him for her death.

Mireles was arrested December 2007 in Mexico. Prosecutors had to promise Mexican authorities they would not seek the death penalty before his extradition was approved. He faces life in prison without parole when sentenced March 31.

Witnesses testified Sander left a southeast Kansas bar with Mireles the night of Nov. 23, 2007. Her battered, nude body was found six days later about 50 miles away.

Public defender Melanie Freeman-Johnson has said another man came into the motel room where the two went and became violent after a drug deal went sour. She argued in her closing that police settled on the convenient suspect.

Mireles testified Friday that he and Sander went to the motel, had sex and drank beer. He said he fought with the other man about the drugs and left the motel.

When Mireles returned, he said he saw Sander’s body, gathered his belongings and her body then fled.

He said he wanted to get to his family and his pregnant girlfriend, Victoria Martens.

He said he didn’t know why he didn’t call police.

“I was scared,” he said. “I figured the first person they’d blame would be me.”

He also said he didn’t know why he wrapped her body in a blanket and put it in the car.

On his way to see his girlfriend in Baxter Springs, Mireles dumped Sander’s body near the side of the road. Mireles and Martens then drove to Texas and on to Mexico.

Authorities later found Sander’s blood on a knife and clothes in a trash bin at Marten’s grandmother’s house in Baxter Springs.

On Friday, Kansas Attorney General Steve Six tried to cast doubt on Mireles, questioning why would he take Sander’s body with him, then dump the body and bring the knife to Baxter Springs.

At one point, Six incredulously asked Mireles: “Does that make any sense to you?”

Mireles replied, “None of this makes any sense to me.”

Well you inconsiderate #$%^@# could have just written "model's death". We all know by now about some of the poor and unlucky choices this woman made, do you need to rub it in?

By the way, its "pornography" not porn, quit honing your journalism skills on internet forums.

In fairness how about these headlines for when a certain, not exactly smart man that owns a newspaper and is dumber than my dead pet tiger salamander dies.

"Local editor, too stupid to live, dies"

"Post-Alzheimer, Pre-Retirement editor Croaks"

"Editor dies, Average IQ of Douglas County Raised 10 Points"

"Editor soils self then collapses"

"Local editor dies, typewriters across Kansas spontaneously become sentient"

"Local editor dies KU administrators rejoice" or the real deal "Local editor dies KU censorship panel is saddened" or the really real deal "Local editor collapses in pool of own vomit, hundreds of suppressed articles damaging to KUAC emerge"

Now in real fairness of course, none of my headlines are not as mean spirited as "Defendant convicted of porn model’s death" because the editor is alive, was not subject to a brutal crime and his family and friends dont have to put up with this sensationalistic BS.

So then, do you have to sell your soul to write this kind of crap instead of just reporting to us that this piece of filth was convicted. I really want to know if you sold your soul for the privilege to write articles and headlines like this, or, did you sell your soul to become a journalist, thus becoming soulless and not capable of giving a damn about how the victims feel when you sensationalize a headline or story.

Sure it is an AP story, but I want to hear from the jerk at the JW that wrote this headline and was too lazy to edit out the sensationalism. I would like to know your excuse, here are some responses for you to choose from.

"Sorry, I am an idiot it wont happen again"

"who cares, sex sells and sex and violence sells better"

"the internet is killing us! I had to publish that"

"you have got to be kidding! this is an entertainment not news industry"

"What are you worried about, this is Kansas, its not like we are teaching kids to read anymore"

"Lighten up! The next KU game is tipping off soon, dont be so damn selfish you are going to kill our good mood"

I predict the editors of the JW are too cowardly to reply to my challenge.

she could have been described as a "butler community college" student --- (and he could have been described as a sadist)

The headline is a sneaky way of blaming the victim. Shame on the LJW.

And it's kind of ironic that the JW can't even follow its own guidelines on "sensitive" stories.

Well if the hall monitors actually read my post I have to compliment them for not deleting it. I took a pretty strong shot at their editor because that article really steamed me.

Maybe my rhetorical skills are faltering?
