From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 12, 1910: “The immediate cause of the strike by the girls in the S.H. Kress store here was because the manager would not allow our mothers to come to the store on Saturday nights and wait for us to walk us home,” said one of the 17 girls who struck. Girls work late on Saturdays and are sometimes afraid to walk home alone. The girls have joined a union, are calling for better wages, but the manager says he will not allow any of them to come back to work. . . . Missouri will get over $1 million from the federal rivers and harbors department to river traffic development. . . . While the population of Lawrence has increased by more than 1,800, the school population has decreated by about 700. There are more teachers and costs are up and such figures must be studied by school officials to give us the best value for our spending. . . . The .school board, by the way, says more suspensions are likely for high school students who are members of the fraternities which have been outlawed. . . . John Lovett who was a football star at KU last fall has quit the team to become a reporter for the Kansas City Times.
