Topeka ? Justices of the Kansas Supreme Court will announce Friday whether they have agreed to reopen a landmark school finance lawsuit the justices dismissed in 2006.

The petition was filed by Schools for Fair Funding, a coalition of 74 school districts. It alleges that the state is failing to live up to a 2006 Supreme Court ruling that the state school finance formula was unconstitutional.

Legislators responded by increasing school funding by $1 billion over four years. However, a significant decline in state revenues caused by the recession forced the state to cut back on those increases.

The state argues that the coalition is trying to get around a law designed to slow down school finance challenges. Attorney General Steve Six also says that no agency can be immune to cuts when state revenues decline.
