A gift from Glasgow: Frieda Culbertson
Since the 1840s, the Black family Bible has been on the move. The Bible, from Culbertson’s mother’s side of the family, originated in Glasgow as a wedding gift and made the trip to the United States from Scotland twice — and has the water marks to prove it. The Bible’s original owner, James Black, left the old country for the U.S. and brought it with him. Once he had a job and was settled, he went back to Scotland to retrieve his family, and instead of leaving such an important possession, he took it with him.
